Every tan solution will look different on each individual client, so there are a few key things to remember when recommending a professional spray tan solution. These are the strength and undertone of the tan, the depth of the client’s natural skin colour, their undertone and the application of the product.
Skin tone refers to the amount of melanin present in the skin, which forms your surface layer of colour. Your undertone are the colours beneath the surface layer of the skin. What you see is what you get with a client’s skin tone, however their undertone can be a little tricker to determine. Undertones fall into 3 main categories:
The easiest way to do this is by checking the veins on their wrist – if they are green, they’re a warm undertone. If they are a blue/bluish-purple, the are cool and if they’re a combination of both they’re neutral.
You can also ask which colour jewellery they normally wear or which they think looks best on them. Clients who wear silver tend to be cool toned, while gold compliments warmer toned people. Clients who tend to pick and choose could be neutral.
Most spray tan solutions are designed to work with client’s undertones, to ensure they look as natural as possible, so it important to establish these when choosing a spray solution. The wrong solution can leave the clients skin appearing dull and washed out, while the right tan with the correct undertone can leave the skin vibrant and glowing!
